I am of two minds about the NEW Science & Tech Museum. It certainly bigger, brighter and has more exhibits. The main corridor gives you easy access to all of the sections of the museum, but because of the corridor is on a diagonal, most of the sections are triangular. Most have multiple doorways, but the signage to identify the sections should be more visible, obvious and clear The unusual layout also creates a few places where "you can't get there from here". Obviously you can, but in these occasions, you can't get to where you want to go directly. Instead, you have to back track which can become annoying if it happens several times
Much more modern and organized than the old setup. Refreshed exhibits are more interactive, and the children's play/learn area is excellent. Even the restaurant prices were reasonable. My only complaint is that many of the exhibits show you the history of the grouping of the items you are looking at, ie the snow machines, but very little is said about the SPECIFIC item if anything at all. For example, there was no context at all for the trailer behind the old Chrysler convertible. Did it belong to someone famous? How did the museum acquire it? Is it a reproduction? It would round out the experience.
Put aside a full day to come visit this place with your kids! Great interactive displays. The crazy kitchen is STILL in tact and entertaining to be in! There are trains, music, tech, and tons of industrial history. Enjoyed every bit as could. Also, it's free after 3:30pm, but closes at 5. Might be a good way to help you decide if your kids would be fine to spend the day. But if you're able to revisit a few days in a row, you could see it all for free, however the cost is totally reasonable.
I had read the reviews and realized that there were mixed opinions of the museum. A lot of people that went before felt that the new one is as good as the original. Since I didnt go to the original one I thought I would give it a try. I can say that it was some what disappointing. The rooms or areas dont seem to have an order or starting points. On several occasions we realized we started at the end. Also, I would think that as the capital of Canada we could get some more memorable artifacts. There were some items that had a good starting point but you were wanting more information. I gave it 3 stars because it was okay. When you drive to the parking there is a huge building. Is this an expansion, didnt see any mention of it. If it is maybe there is hope for some improvements and I will check this out.Last item. The location is not downtown so when you plan for your visit it is 10 minutes from all the other Ottawa attractions downtown.
A wonderful place to bring your kids. Went specifically for the LEGO exhibit, which is worth the extra entrance fee. A very varied exhibit ending with a great section for kids to make their own creations. The rest of the museum is nice too. Theres a bit of everything and although it makes you feel a bit old to see a Walkman on display as a historical music device, its interesting to follow how various devices have evolved. The kids section is fantastic as well. My kids really enjoyed the rock climbing wall. It would be nice if the parking was included with the entrance fee, but its still fairly cheap ($8 max for the day) that it doesnt take away from the overall experience.
